Why grinding practice tests stops raising your IELTS band

You can sit thirty mock tests and stay at 6.0. A practice test measures your English; it doesn’t build it. Here’s what the research says actually moves the underlying skill—and where mocks still earn their place.

You have sat twenty, maybe thirty full practice tests, and your band has not moved off 6.0 in months. The instinct—do more tests—is often exactly why you are stuck. A practice test is a measuring instrument, not a training one.

A mock measures your English; it doesn’t build it

Stepping on a scale more often does not make you lighter. A full IELTS mock works the same way: it tells you where you are, which is useful, but the act of sitting it does not add the vocabulary, collocations, and grammar you were missing when you lost the marks. Those have to come from somewhere else.

There is a real learning effect from testing—retrieving something you have studied strengthens your memory of it. But a global exam is not focused retrieval of things you are learning; it is a broad assessment. Repeating the assessment without growing the underlying language is measurement, not learning.

What the research says actually builds the language

The most influential account of how a second language develops is Stephen Krashen’s input hypothesis: we acquire language mainly by understanding messages—reading and listening we can follow—rather than by studying rules. research finding · krashen-input The hypothesis is debated, but the practical prediction it makes is well supported by evidence on extensive reading.

A meta-analysis of 34 studies (3,942 learners) found that extensive reading—reading large amounts of understandable text—produced medium-sized improvements in reading proficiency, vocabulary, and grammar, and larger before-and-after gains over a sustained programme. research finding · nakanishi-2015 That is the raw material an exam measures: the words you recognise, the structures you can produce, the speed you can read at.

Vocabulary is the clearest example. The most frequent few thousand word families already cover the great majority of everyday text—around 95% at 2,000–3,000 families. research finding · nation-coverage The gap between a plateaued learner and a higher band is usually a shortage of this working vocabulary, used accurately, not a shortage of rare words. A mock reveals the gap; input closes it.

Why input beats another mock, in practice

Think of your study time as a budget. One well-known framework—Paul Nation’s “four strands”—argues that a balanced course spends roughly equal time on meaning-focused input (reading, listening), meaning-focused output (speaking, writing), deliberate language study (vocabulary, grammar, exam technique), and fluency practice, with deliberate study kept to about a quarter of the total. research finding · nation-strands Most learners who plateau on practice tests have inverted this: nearly all deliberate drilling, almost no input. The strand that grows the language is the one they cut.

How you schedule the time matters too. What mock tests are genuinely good for

None of this means never sit a mock. A timed practice test does three things input cannot:

  • diagnosis—it shows which criterion or question type is costing you marks, so you know what to work on;
  • timing and stamina—the real test is long and time-pressured, and you need rehearsal under those conditions;
  • format familiarity—knowing the instructions and answer format removes avoidable mistakes.

The problem is proportion, not existence. A mock is most valuable as a diagnostic you run occasionally and then act on, and as timed rehearsal in the weeks before the exam—not as your daily study.

A more effective weekly mix

For a self-studying learner months out from the test:

  1. Most of your time: compelling input. Read and listen to English you genuinely enjoy and can mostly follow—graded readers, articles, subtitled video—for the volume that grows vocabulary and grammar.
  2. A regular slice: output with feedback. Write and speak, then get specific, criterion-level feedback and revise—feedback only helps if you re-practise the corrected form.
  3. A smaller, growing slice: timed practice. One diagnostic mock every week or two early on, increasing as the exam nears, to rehearse timing and format.

As the test date approaches, shift the balance toward timed practice; long before it, protect the input.

What this does and doesn’t promise

Input is the higher-leverage lever, but it is not a guaranteed timeline. The studies above report average effects across groups, not a promise for any individual, and reading improves the reading, vocabulary, and grammar an exam measures—which is not the same as a fixed number of bands by a fixed date. Near the exam you genuinely do need timed practice; this is an argument about proportion, not a case against ever sitting a mock.

What the evidence does say is clear: if months of practice tests have not moved your band, the missing ingredient is usually more understandable input, not more tests. So before booking another mock, ask what it will teach you that you will then act on. If the honest answer is “confirm I am still 6.0,” spend the hour on input instead—and use the four-skill map to find the specific criterion or question type worth your deliberate practice.
